Pest control services cut by quarter of Welsh councils via BBC News

March 26, 2015

This item has appeared on the BBC News web site: //www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-wales-31993485

As stated in the article, it is of concern if people try to carry out effective rodent control by buying amateur products from their local DIY store. There are changes soon with the commercial use of Rat Poison or as we call it rodenticide. Most of the rodenticide used today are termed as Second Generation Anticoagulant Rodenticide (SGARs). They are much more potent than first Generation compounds such as Warferin, where multiple feeds were required by a rodent to obtain a lethal dose.

Some SGARs can provide a lethal dose to rodents in one feed.  The other problem is secondary poising of non target species such as domestic animals and birds of prey.  See the Rodent Control section of our web site for more information.

How much is a life worth?  You would not do DIY on the gas main in your house as it can have fatal consequences –  you would call a professional qualified Gas Safe Engineer. The same goes for pest control – most pest control compounds are toxic to life forms, so you need to know what you are doing when you put them around your home!

Always use a B.P.C.A. registered pest controller who has their BASIS Prompt CPD points up to date.
